Mark Frankel : Founder, SBU

Previous experience: Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Town, Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy – University of Kwa Zulu-Natal, Durban. Chartered Accountant (South Africa). Various finance senior management roles with companies such as Rabie Property Developers, Frank and Hirsch, Bank of New Zealand.

Spent a year with Oxfam as Regional Finance and Systems Manager, Southern Africa (RSA, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Uganda). Seven years as Finance Director with Master Currency (Pty) Ltd, a Bidvest Group company, heading up the finance, IT and treasury divisions. Spent a year with Charles Maisel gaining an insight into the world of Social Entrepreneurship.

Co-founded SBU with Charles Maisel in 2005 as an ED initiative of Master Currency. Served as non-executive director since then until coming on board full time as CEO in April 2010.

Family: Wife, Kim. Daughter, Alexandra and son Sam.

The thing you like most about yourself: Throwing myself in the deep end and seeing how I’ll cope.

The thing you like least about yourself: Impatient and demanding

Your favourite hobbies: Yoga, playing the harmonium, walking in the mountains and recently surfing.
